Here’s a great video by Derek Sivers talking about how to make the most of a conference, particularly after the conference. I’ve attached the link below so everyone can check out the short video from Derek’s presentation. Lots of great ideas.
The 2010 SXSW Music Conference is around the corner. Either as an individual attendee or band showcasing (in an “official” or “unofficial” capacity) there are a few things you should consider before you heading to Austin. Specifically, do you have any specific goals in mind for why you’re going, what you’re trying to accomplish by going, etc.?
In addition to having fun and listening to great music, sit back and think of 3-4 “specific” actions you want to accomplish that would hopefully be in line with helping you achieve some of your overall goals for the year.
For example, if you’re wanting to increase your fan base in particular markets, think about contacting some of the promoters, booking agents, venue owners, etc. that live in those areas that will be attending (you can find several via the “MySXSW” posting areas). Or, hook up with other bands from those areas at the festival and trade names, contacts, gigs, etc. Help each other and you’ll be amazed what might come of it. Also, have a specific number of contacts you want to accumulate. Of course, more is probably better.
While having fun is always one of the main reason folks attend SXSW, your band is a “business” and you don’t want to waste your hard earned dollars travelling to Austin without anything to show for it at the end of the festival that won’t help further your career.
Have fun, learn as much as you can, and help somebody else while you’re there.
